Toward Justice

Printer-friendly version

The Toward Justice Group, formed in the wake of the Ferguson uprising, meets monthly on the first Friday of the month at noon. Partnering with Metropolitan Congregations United, the group promotes racial justice and local and regional governmental reform.  Advocacy includes supporting juvenile justice, voting rights, police reform, First Amendment rights in school classrooms and libraries, and environmental justice.

In addition,Toward Justice prepares and presents educational programs for the congregation such as the ARREST Project.  The group holds a public witness in support of Black Lives Matter on Saturdays from 10 - 11 on the corner of Kingshighway and Waterman.

Mission of the First Unitarian Church of St Louis:

We strive to be a welcoming congregation, inspiring lives of loving kindness and integrity by nurturing spirituality, building community, and advancing justice.

The Mission of Toward Justice:

We educate ourselves, the congregation and the community to acknowledge the human suffering caused  by privilege and racial injustice.  We act by witnessing, advocating for change and linking with other community groups.  Although we primarily act locally, we support such efforts nationally and globally as well.

This work is challenging and can be uncomfortable.  We strive to learn best practices for engaging in it together.  All are welcome to join with us as we aspire to live out our values based on the proposed Unitarian Universalist 8th Principle:

“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”
