The T.S. Eliot Society was started in 1980 by Leslie Konnyu, Hungarian scholar and teacher at St. Louis University. The Rev. Earl Holt gave the fourth Annual T. S. Eliot Memorial Lecture in 1983, and became very involved in the development of the society during his tenure at First Church. The Society is an international association of persons interested in the art and thought of T.S. Eliot. Their annual meeting is often held in St. Louis, the city of Eliot's birth, on the weekend closest to his September 26th birthday. Among other activities, the meeting features the T. S. Eliot Memorial Lecture, given by an eminent scholar or poet. This lecture is open to the public and the members and friends of First Unitarian church are encouraged to attend.
