Purpose of the Committee:
The Committee on Mission of First Unitarian Church exists to strengthen the overall ministry of the church. Mission is that which First Church aspires to be to itself and to its community. It does this by working with church staff, lay leadership, and members to ensure that church focus, activities, committees, and community involvement are reflective of the church's defined mission.
Goal:
One of the primary goals of the Committee on Mission is to encourage direct and constructive communication among members of the congregation and between members of the congregation and church ministers and staff around appropriate focus areas for church life. All discussion and feedback is done with the recognition that our church is a dynamic and evolving organization that benefits from an active, informed, and involved membership. Toward this end, the Committee on Mission facilitates a process of periodic review and discussion of First Church's mission and goals by the congregation, church committees, and church staff.
Evaluation:
The defined mission resulting from congregational discussion guides the Committee on Mission in its annual assessment of overall church effectiveness in carrying out its mission both within the church itself and in the wider St. Louis community. Any church member may contact the Committee on Mission with response to the church's mission and activities; such feedback will be considered along with feedback obtained through formal and informal church surveys, interviews, and focus groups in articulation of church mission. The Committee on Mission prepares an annual report of its work for the Board of Trustees and for presentation to the church membership at the annual meeting.
Committee Structure:
The Committee on Mission is a Board Committee consisting of seven members who serve staggered three-year terms and two ex officio members (the Minister and the President of the Board of Trustees). Members may be appointed for no more than six consecutive years of service. Appointed members must have been church members for three years and must commit adequate time to Committee on Mission duties.
You are encouraged to contact the chairperson of the Committee on Mission with any questions or concerns you may have about it.
